“Although it sucks to not come out with the bigger trophy today, I had a lot of joy this week,” Gauff said in her runner-up speech at the Miami Open, her home tournament. “That’s something I’m taking away from this the most. I was getting a little emotional on the bench, but not sad tears. I’m just having two weeks of gratitude.”
Those words carried extra significance since Gauff has been recovering from an injury at Indian Wells and previously discussed her tendency to “talk down on myself.” She noted that she had been inspired by Olympic figure skater Alysa Liu’s ability to find joy in the moment.
Gauff said that the recovery work she’s done plus seeing (and hearing) her family and friends made her focus on gratitude. Sounds like good advice for athletes at all levels!
